Scripture Reflections for the First Sunday of Lent

Year A, Lectionary 22

How are we to face temptations this Lent? By continually relying on God just as Jesus always did. Even if we were to grasp like Adam and Eve to decide for ourselves, we must return back to God for guidance. So while it may seem we're in a desert, if we trust in God we will be ministered by angels as well.

Matthew 4:1-11

“what Jesus is rejecting is the empty promises of a society that puts any one individual before another and in rejecting them, in rejecting the comforts that come with that, Jesus is able to not only live and move towards his purpose, he allows us to have a model of liberation that we can all bring ourselves closer and closer to”

Overall Readings

“one reason Jesus is able to save all humanity through his act of obedience is because he is recapitulating the fall of Adam. He is taking that up into himself, through his words and his actions and above all through the cross, and he is undoing the effects of the fall”

"Original Sin" | Brant Pitre | February 26, 2020

“so what the devil is appealing to here is Jesus' desire to take the kingdoms of the world back from the devil, right, which is what he's come to do. But to do it without the cross, to do it without suffering”

"Season of Lent" | Brant Pitre | February 24, 2020

“how do we stay strong on the battlefield? It's by giving God time. It's by worship. It's by priority of God...to know the importance of God in our life.”

"Get Away Satan" | Fr. Stephen Thorne | March 1, 2020

“Shame and guilt are not the point of these stories. The point is the choice is as ever ours. That is how loved we are. Thanks be to God”

Emily Dagostino | February 17, 2023

“So the spin of Genesis is really, one way to look at it is, that's forgetting the truth that life is a gift. And the gospel, Matthew's version of the temptations is a perfect example of what it is to remember the gift”

GatherClip | Sr. Joanne |

“Satan’s stranglehold on the kingdoms of this world has been broken. We were prisoners of war in the territory of the enemy. The death and resurrection of Jesus was the divine invasion and conquest of that territory, once and for all.”

"Into the desert" | Fr. Geoffrey Plant | February 19, 2023

“He entered the desert as a carpenter and he left the desert, exited the desert as the Messiah, as the Son of God. He went through a transformation in those 40 days in the desert...and the Church is hoping that you go through a journey, a transformation.”

Fr. Mark E. Thibodeaux, SJ | February 26, 2023

“When the time was right he changed water into wine. When the time was right he multiplied loaves of bread to feed others. Jesus was also interested in the bigger picture. Changing stones to bread at that time was not part of the bigger picture for our salvation so he looked beyond his ego.”

Fr. Emmanuel Ochigbo | February 22, 2023

“Worship is a way of life. Worship is a state of being. Worship is that relationship of love.”
