Luke 9:9
Herod the tetrarch hears about Jesus. He knows OF Jesus but Herod doesn’t know Jesus. Herod is interested in Jesus for the wrong reasons. He seeks to see Jesus with his eyes rather than his heart. And so Herod fails to see Jesus at all.
Are we like Herod? Do we hear about Jesus and his church and are intrigued for the wrong reasons? Do we attend church just to be social, out of habit, or other self-interests? When we do, how can we then ever really have an encounter with God?
We are meant to gather around Jesus to get to know God. To enter into communion with God in order to truly have life. If our life as Christians doesn’t have a relationship with Jesus then we will be like Herod and miss God completely. We need to open our hearts and minds to receive Jesus who is already present among us.
Let us make an effort to truly center our lives on Jesus. Let us seek him by following God’s path and opening ourselves to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Let us not be stuck on just hearing about Jesus but letting God’s word enter our heart and then journeying with Christ. In doing so let us hope to begin to see Jesus. See God among us.
